Random Events - Which to Keep and Which to Remove.

Random events are by far the most annoying thing in RuneScape and recently, Jagex has announced they’ll be cutting their obsessive list of so-called “random”, “macro-stopping” NPCs down in size - which I am fairly sure the majority of RuneScape’s fanbase will be happy to hear… as long as evil bob gets nootered and the sandwich lady is hit by a malfunctioning gnomecopter, because if not, I’ll be greatly disappointed and even more aggravated that I’ll be seeing them more often.

When I began playing RuneScape for the second time in 2004, there were very few random events. There was the River Troll, for fishing; the Tree Spirit, for woodcutting; the Rock Golem, for mining; The mysterious old man with his Maze, the Mime, Random item and the Strange Box. Also appearing were the Genie and I’m assuming the strange plant, poisonous gas and the old tangle vines on members. It wasn’t long, however, as the popularity of RuneScape began to soar and simeltaneously the demand for gold. The goldfarmers invaded and Jagex counteracted with all kinds of new random events such as the Sandwich Lady, the Frogs, the Abyssal Rift and Mr Hyde. The bloody evil twin, drill demon and evil bob made their ways into the game too and although Jagex obviously were trying to make these as entertaining as possible to those trying to train in peace, the fact was they were created solely to make life hard for macroers, and they all fucking smelled of it - every time an evil bob came to pick someone up, a small yellow word would always appear above their heads; “ffs”.

What are the good random events? Not all random events are bad, no, this isn’t the case; after all, RuneScape is a very repetitive game and if you think otherwise, you’ve obviously not ever powerlevelled. Random events in my eryes are only good when they detract the player from ther monotony of powertraining and give a nice little reward. Examples of such are the MOM’s strange box, the Genie, Mr. Hyde, Tree Spirits and so on. What is NOT a good random event are those like the sandwich lady (who requires a number of clicks making it impossible during combat), the drill demon, evil bob and the twins who take the player away from training to do a stupid test for little to no reward.

I’m now going to list each and every current random event, and say whether it should be kept, killed or changed. Information has been gathered from the RuneScape Knowledge Base.

Golem - This event should be kept, but maybe the drop list could be made better; it could drop mining-boosting items for example.
River Troll - Kept, and maybe it could drop better fish or even clothing/items to boost fishnig level.
Tree Spirit - Kept, once again. Woodcutting is stupidly boring and I know I love seeing one of these just to get some combat involved.
Shade - This one really has to be kept, as Shade Robes are only dropped by this thing.
Zombie - Changed to drop better bones or items to boost prayer like the Shade.

Certers - Kill them. Regardless of the fact it’s two clicks and near-impossible to do while in combat, anyone can tell the difference between a helmet and a fish… as long as they can read english or german.
Drill Demon - Unfortunately this guy has to stay but I’d love him to be less frequent to those with the set. I’m sure that’s within Jagex’s capacity to code but I doubt it’ll happen.
Drunken Dwarf - Remove it, or make it give you different kinds of beers and foods.
Freaky Forester - Has to stay due to lederhosen outfits, would be nicer if there were more than 3 items to get though.
Frog - Won’t get removed as the Frog Outfits still exist, which is a shame considering it’s bloody annoying. More items need to be available as prizes.
Genie - Keep.
Highwayman - Remove
Jekyll and Hyde - Keep
Lost Pirate - Remove
Maze - Keep! This is one of the few randoms which can give good rewards.
Mime - Won’t be removed due to MIme Clothes but once again, would be ncie to have more emotes or prizes for those who have the set instead of a pathetic 500 coins.
MOM - Keep.
Pirate’s Combination Lock - Haven’t seen this noe a lot due to my lack of farming experience, so I’m undecided.
Quiz Master - Remove.
Strange Box - Keep.
Strange Plant - Would be nice to see this removed, but because of the fact strange fruits are tradable and only recieved through this random. Like most of my suggestions, this plant could be improved by giving off different fruits which boost stats, or heal other things, like prayer, summoning and hp.
Security Guard - Remove.

Ent - Keep - Woodcutting is as boring as hell, and needs a few changes once in a while.
Evil Chicken - Remove.
Exploding Rock - Remove.
Poison Gas - Remove. I doubt anyone actually trains thieving through chests anymore anyway. Thank Pyramid Plunder for that.
Swarm - Remove.
Whirlpool - Remove.

Evil Bob - Castrate the fucker.
Surprise Exam - Keep this one, as the reward is actually quite good.
Beekeeper - Remove.
Grab the Evil Twin - Remove.
Pinball - Remove.
Gravedigger - It’ll have to be kept, but I have learnt not to bury bones on fire giant tasks simply because I hate this guy.
Candle Light - This is the one single random event I have never ever had in over 4 years of playing RuneScape. I’d like to do this at one point but in all fairness it’ll have to go.
Pillory - Sure, why not keep this one? I don’t thik you can get it while pyramid plunder-ing anyway.
Prison Pete - Get rid of it. I’m sure the ScapeRune modellers will be pissed but they can fuck themselves.
Sandwich Lady - She can get bent for all I care. Get rid of her.

Lost and Found Office - has to be kept to stop the return of tele autoers. … if they’ve disappeared.

That’s my opinion on the Random Events at the moment. I’d love to hear your feedback on it too. But,
That’s all for now ;)

  1. They can all GTFO for all I care. I have all the random clothes in my house and the exp rewards are pretty small.

    “Castrate the fucker” <3 u Nubis <3

  2. I agree with all of these, with the addition that Molly should be more than removed. She should be stuck up in a gibbet so that we can all watch her slowly decomposing.

My ire with her dates from before buying a fast computer (ie a couple of months ago). It was practically impossible to catch the ‘evil’ (where’s the evidence?) twin on a slower computer, meaning that you were there for ages. She could be caught eventually by leaving your trap cross at one spot and hoping that she stepped into it, or else just randomly capturing people, until your time was up and then accepting that Molly would shout at you and teleport you somewhere random.

Similarly, I’m with you on castrating the fucker (Bob), as his island lags on a slow computer to the point where you are kicked off Runescape. It often took several attempts at logging in, moving an inch, having the computer freeze, getting logged out (repeat to fade), unti you finally got through the cold fish thing.

You asked on the farming random, Pirate Pete. I vote to keep him. His task is very short and his entertainment factor is immense. As an avid farmer, he is possibly one of my most common randoms, yet I still giggle everytime he tantrums, ‘Arrr! I want my treasure!’
